European Lawyers in Lesvos (ELIL) provides free, independent legal assistance to asylum seekers on Lesvos. Because every asylum seeker should be able to receive free, high-quality assistance from an independent, experienced lawyer before their asylum interview.
European Lawyers in Lesvos (ELIL) opened office in Lesvos in 2016. Since then, they provided legal assistance to over 9,000 people. Their operations have been supported by over 200 lawyers from 18 different European countries.
Not only does their work facilitate access to justice, thereby contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Their assistance has a big effect on the approval rate of cases. Of those assisted by ELIL, 74.5% have been granted asylum, compared to an average of 46.5% in Greece.
With numbers on Lesvos at a record high and reception conditions rapidly deteriorating, the need to protect this fundamental right has never been greater or more challenging.
