The intention of the Fred Foundation is to inspire a more functional, balanced and caring society. It aims to stimulate people to be self- reliant and contribute to sense of ‘self- responsAbility’. Our projects are based on mutual co-existence through sharing and caring, rather than a society of competition and inequality.
The Fred Foundation offers co-funding for projects that are proposed by inspired individuals and organizations. With financial support, the StartFund aims to contribute to the empowerment of people. The focus of the StartFund’s support is on projects in the fields of healthcare, care for nature & environment and community care.
StartFund new style
After co-funding almost 300 projects, initiated by inspiring individuals and organizations in 51 countries in just over 15 years, StartFund is now in a period of review. We are developing a new approach to enhance the effectiveness of our contributions. With effect from early next year, we will:
• support projects within the geographic areas of India, Tanzania, Belgium and The Netherlands
• focus on enhancing the effectiveness of local economies to benefit, amongst others, the healthcare and education systems
• engage in carefully monitoring our projects for progress and learning purposes
• participate in projects for a maximum of 3 years
• actively look for partners and invite them to cooperate with us

Fred Matser is an inspiring humanitarian who, like many others, cares deeply about the future of the planet. He has made it his life’s work to contribute towards creating a more functional society by means of inspiration and empower-ment. Towards this end Fred has been a (co-) initiator, (co)creator and (co-) financer on a wide range of projects and over 15 foundations in both The Netherlands and abroad since 1983. The projects as well as the foundations cover the fields of healthcare, environment, conservation, peace and global trans-formation.
Malaria No More! Netherlands is a charitable organization whose mission is to actively contribute to the prevention and treatment of malaria. To this end, the charity works closely with its sister organizations in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain.
The Gorbachev Foundation is an international non- governmental non-profit organization. Legal entities and individuals from any country may take part in the Foundation’s activities in a voluntary capacity. The Gorbachev Foundation has developed links of close cooperation with leading universities, foundations, international organizations, government bodies and non- governmental organizations in various countries all over the world.
The Peace Flame House was founded and built on the initiative of Fred Matser and his Peace Flame '94 Foundation from the Netherlands. He was the one who brought together the sportsmen, that had participated in the Sarajevo '84 Winter Olympics, and, together with other good-willed people, he launched the initiative of bringing back ''the flame'' or peace and cooperation to Bosnia and Herzegovina. To accomplish this goal he founded the Peace Flame '94 foundation, which, from 1994 to this day, has been working on many projects in Tuzla and Sarajevo.
